NOTE: The two 16-inch acetates of the “Camel Caravan” broadcast of 16 August 1938 are in part defective: there are numerous “skips-and-repeats” in the renditions of Don’t Be That Way, ‘S Wonderful, Three Little Words, and the closing theme and its voice-over announcements by Benny Goodman and Dan Seymour. These flaws are in the cassette transfer supplied to me by R. J. Reynolds.
In the transfer above, I have made a cursory attempt to eliminate those flaws, and so produce uninterrupted renditions. My attempts are fairly successful for Don’t Be That Way and “Swonderful, less so for Three Little Words and the closing theme and announcement.
Very carefully cutting and splicing a tape transfer made from the cassette could improve my efforts. This should be done professionally, by an engineer skilled in this technique. Thus, if it becomes necessary to produce a master tape that would be the basis of an LP release - -the cassette should be provided to such an engineer.
Appended to this transfer is a transfer of Three Little Words, from another source. This privately recorded acetate misses a few notes at the beginning of the performance, and its audio fidelity is not as good as that of the Reynolds transfer. It does not, however, have the “skip-and-repeat” flaws that are in the Reynolds cassette.
APPENDED: Privately-recorded acetated
