NOTE: “Good-Bye” is announced as to be played in its entirety, not as the closing theme. Despite the 41-second overrun of the program’s permissible 30 minute limit, “Good-Bye” is cut off the air before it is finished. A 30-second interval of unrecorded tape precedes the next transfer, to accommodate the possible future acquisition of the introductory announcement and opening theme, portions of which are missing from the cassette supplied by R.J. Reynolds; and,
(indicated on Reynold’s program log), a “listener alert” that the program might be interrupted because of possible news breaks out the “European Crisis.” This undoubtedly refers to Hitler’s threat to invade the Sudetenland (a portion of Czechoslovakia). On 29 September, Prime Minister Chamberlain and Lord Halifax of Great Britain: Eduard Daladier and Georges Bonnet of France; Benito Mussolini and Count Galeazzo Ciano of Italy; and Hitler and [Joachim] von Ribbentrop of Germany, will meet in Munich in an attempt to avoid war. On the 30th they will sign the Munich Pact (it is dated the 29th, but actually was signed on the 30th), which capitulated to Hitler and permitted him to occupy the Sudetenland. When Chamberlain returned home, he made that infamous “Peace in our time” statement…..
