32:34: “14” - Muskrat Ramble - Mel Powell and his Orchestra
NOTES: Two 12” 78 rpm acetates are shown above. Each has a printed label reading, Samuel Goldwyn Studios Prod. No._____ Title_____-. Blanks following “Prod. No." and
“Title " is completed in ink, with artist credits and tune titles. No inscriptions are in the wax. The “matrix” designations and “catalog numbers” shown are voice announcements preceding the selections. “Stealin’ Apples” on 3200 DS-24 is an Alternate Take to that title on the WOR ET’s and on the film soundtrack. All other cuts are THE SAME AS those respective cuts on the WOR ET’s and on the film soundtrack. The Armstrong-Hampton Nonet selection is identified on the acetate as “Goldwyn Stomp.” Similarly, the Mel Powell selection is identified as “Muskrat Ramble.” This resolves some confusion, contributed in part by a listing in “BG - On The Record,” page 453. The entry for “A Son Was Born,” August 9, 1948, Capital mx 3421, is shown as “Goldwyn Stomp.” A Japanese Lp released the Mel Powell selection, “Muskrat Ramble.” as “Goldwyn Stomp,” using the matrix shown in “BG-OTR.”Now that the Armstrong-Hampton release is known to have been titled, “Goldwyn Stomp,” The title of the Mel Powell release can be correctly identified as “Muskrat Ramble.” It seems likely to me that: All cuts stemming from the film “A Song Was Born” were made in 1947, including those released on CAP mx’s 3426, 3427 and 3421. If that statement is correct – and it must be, in all it must be, in all logic – then the out-of-chronological-sequence CAP mx’s apply to a pressing date (could be a year later than the filming), not to a recording date.
