DescriptionIn the third of nine clips in a first grade classroom, four children: Stephanie, Gerardo, Sean and Aaron, are working first on Problem 3 and then on Problem 4 of a set of 6 word problems involving addition and subtraction. For the first of these, Stephanie and Gerardo discuss whether the number of Don's tennis balls would be one more or one less than Jim's, if Jim has one fewer tennis balls. The group agrees that there would be one more. For Problem 4, the children argue about whether Grandpa would have 3 or 6 chickens, if selling 3 chickens would result in his having the same number as Dad. As the children consider each problem, Researcher Alice Alston encourages them to explain their reasoning to each other.

Jim has 3 tennis balls. Jim has 1 fewer tennis ball than Don. How many tennis balls does Don have?
Statement of Problem Four:
Dad has 3 chickens. If Grandpa sells 3 chickens, he will have as many as Dad. How many chickens does Grandpa have?
