Word problems with addition and subtraction, Stephanie's group, Clip 7 of 9: Determining solutions for problems 5 and 6 [video]. Retrieved from https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/T3R78C4Q
DescriptionIn the seventh of nine clips in a first grade classroom, four children: Stephanie, Gerardo, Sean and Aaron, revisit and reconsider their solution to the final problem of a set of six word problems involving addition and subtraction. Refer to clip 4 of the series for their first solution to the problem. In clip 6 of the series, the children revisited Problem 5 and recorded 2 as their answer. although they hesitated because 2 was also their answer for Problem 6. When Researcher Alice Alston encourages the children to find a way to show her how they determined their answer.for Problem 6 , Stephanie builds two towers with available Unifix cubes, one with six cubes and the other with four cubes. She explains that the difference of two is the answer. They look back at problem 5 and note that the difference between five cubes and three cubes is also two and leave that number as the answer for each of the problems.
Statement of Problem 5:
