DescriptionIn the fourth clip in a series of seven from the seventh of seven interviews, 8th grader Stephanie and researcher Carolyn Maher investigate how to numerically represent the number of Unifix towers for n = 4 cubes tall, selecting from red and yellow cubes, for each case from r = 0 red cubes to r = 4 red cubes. Maher poses questions about the algebraic representation for each case and how it might be generalized for n = 5 and n = 6. Researcher Donna Weir is observing.
The problems posed to Stephanie are:
How might you use the same reasoning (building from towers with exactly one red cube) that produced Unifix-cube towers with two red cubes, when selecting from red and yellow cubes, to determine the number of towers 4-tall with exactly 3 cubes? How would you represent this numerically and algebraically?
How could you use this reasoning to represent numerically the number of towers 4-tall with four red cubes?
Given the single tower with no red cubes, how could you represent numerically the number of towers with exactly one red cube?
