DescriptionIn the first of eight clips in Series One of Exploring Linear Functions, six 7th grade students in an after-school enrichment program are introduced to the Guess My Rule activity by researcher Arthur Powell. Researcher Powell proposes numbers for the independent variable, represented as a "□" and all of the students use various strategies to predict the resulting dependent variable for each number, represented as a "∆". The pairs of numbers are recorded in a Truth Table as students, particularly Ariel and Yonny, become more accurate in using the patterns that they recognize in their predictions. Notice that in rewriting the table onto an overhead transparency after the first several number pairs have been decided, Powell mistakenly copies 18 rather than 16 as the resulting "∆" when 6 is the "□".
The table as developed by researcher Powell and the students:
X Y
5 13
3 7
6 16 then recopied as 18
8 22
4 10
0 -2
