TitleFractions, Grade 4, Clip 2 of 4: Additive vs. multiplicative reasoning
PublisherNew Brunswick, NJ: Robert B. Davis Institute for learning, , c1993-09-21
DescriptionResearcher Amy Martino posed two related tasks to the students that highlighted the difference between additive and multiplicative reasoning. First, she asked the students: If we call the orange ‘two’, what can we say about yellow? After some questioning, Brian provided the number name one for the yellow rod. Then, the researcher asked: What if I change the name of the orange to ‘six’…what number name would I call the yellow? Kimberly offered the number name of five, which Alan countered. He stated that the number name for the yellow rod in this case would be three. Jessica backed his claim with a justification. Then, Kimberly explained that she had made an error and talked about what she had been thinking that had led her to that mistake. She then explained how she knew that Alan's solution was correct.
