DescriptionIn the eighth clip in a series of nine from the first of seven interviews focusing on early algebraic ideas about the binomial expansion, Stephanie explores possible meanings for x*y + y*x (with * signifying multiplication) in order to simplify the expression x*x + x*y + y*x + y*y. Working with the researcher, Carolyn Maher, she determines that x*y + y*x can be rewritten as 2xy and the total expression can be simplified as x squared plus 2xy plus y squared.
The problem presented to Stephanie:
If x(x + y) + y(x + y) = x*x + x*y + y*x + y*y, how might you simplify this expression?
