DescriptionThe last clip of eight in Series One of Exploring Linear Functions occurs during the students' second day exploring Guess My Rule problems. Researcher Iuliana Radu is observing as James prepares the table for his invented problem. He responds to researcher Radu's inquiry by saying that his rule for the table is "X plus 3 times 3". Both James and Ariel agree that this rule will provide the Y value in each case. When teacher/intern Gilberto Ladino asks whether someone new to the problem would be certain about which operation to do first, both students indicate that they see no problem. Ariel, however, says that his teacher had told their class that parentheses around X+3 would be another way of representing the rule.
