TitleRevisiting construction of large models to compare fractions, Clip 3 of 5: Attempting to reconstruct the big model for comparing two thirds and three fourths
PublisherNew Brunswick, NJ: Robert B. Davis Institute for Learning, , c1993-10-08
DescriptionIn the third of five clips from this classroom session, David, Erik, and Meredith are building a large model on the floor in an attempt to reconstruct what they had built in a previous session. However, the model they built consisting of a train of two black rods, two blue rods, and two orange rods as one was not working for them as well as the large model they had built the day before. As they lined up purple and light green rods against the train, the group began to discuss how to modify the model to make it work. Erik suggested substituting a brown rod for a black rod, and Meredith suggested using another blue rod instead of the second black rod. She then suggested removing the purple rods from the model. Erik objected, saying that there would be no twelfths if the purple rods were removed. Meredith asks "where's the two thirds?" in an attempt to situate their model reconstruction efforts in the problem that asked them to deterine which is bigger, two thirds or three fourths. As they try to remember their original model, David asked if the light green rods should be removed since they were not needed for the problem. Erik then gets the idea to measure the length of the model, and uses a meter stick to try to determine the model's length in centimeters.
