Word problems with addition and subtraction, Stephanie's group, Clip 9 of 9: Reasoning about the solution to problem 4 with the teacher [video]. Retrieved from https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/T3GT5K4F
DescriptionIn the final clip of the series of nine in a first grade classroom, four children: Stephanie, Gerardo, Sean and Aaron, explain their reasoning about problems 4 of a set of 6 problems to their teacher, Angela Marinaro. In this clip the children revisit Problem 4, modeling the problem with Unifix cubes. There is disagreement about whether the answer is 3 or 6. Researcher Alice Alston asks Stephanie to explain her earlier statement about the importance of the word "have" in the problem. Refer to clip 3 of the series for the children's initial reasoning about the problem.
Statement of Problem four:
Dad has 3 chickens. If Grandpa sells 3 chickens, he will have as many as Dad. How many chickens does Grandpa have?
