TitleEarly algebra ideas involving two variables, Clip 3 of 18: Introduction to guess my rule
PublisherNew Brunswick, NJ: Robert B. Davis Institute for Learning, , c1993-10-01
DescriptionIn the third of 18 clips focusing on Early Algebra Ideas Involving Two Variables, when Researcher Robert Davis asks the students to explain what they understand to be the mathematical task, Milin responds that they are to find the equation for a Truth Set presented in table form. Davis challenges the class to study the Truth Set tables on the worksheets that he has just distributed and to write equations for each of them. The students begin working on the first two Truth Set Tables (printed below) and share their ideas individually with Davis. As the session for the Day One of Early Algebra Ideas closes, Davis revisits the earlier equations with one variable, which he now defines as quadratic equations. Ankur repeats the general “secrets” that were important in solving them. Milin, Matt, Brian, Robert, Ankur and Michele I are featured during the activity. Researchers Carolyn Maher, Alice Alston and Amy Martino, along with Marcia O’Brien, district supervisor, and Michael Poe, teacher, are observing.
