TitleEarly algebra ideas involving two variables, Clip 2 of 18: Truth sets in a table
PublisherNew Brunswick, NJ: Robert B. Davis Institute for Learning, , c1993-10-01
DescriptionIn the second of 18 clips focusing on Early Algebra Ideas Involving Two Variables, Researcher Robert Davis writes the equation printed below on the white board and asks the 6th grade students to think of values for the “box” and the “triangle” that would make the statement true. The children are asked to figure out each value for the "triangle" when “box” is evaluated for consecutive numbers beginning with zero. Each pair of numbers that makes a legal and true sentence is recorded in a table that Davis identifies as representing the truth set for equations with two variables. Students raise the question as to what consitutes a mathematical secret and whether there always is a "secret" when working with mathematical ideas. Davis then refocuses the group and announces that, instead of finding the truth set for a particular equation, the task is now to find the equation that works for a particular truth set table of values for "box" and "triangle". Stephanie, Jeff and Milin are featured during the activity. Researchers Carolyn Maher, Alice Alston and Amy Martino, along with Marcia O’Brien, district supervisor, and Michael Poe, teacher, are observing.
The equation presented to the students:
(□ x 2) + 1 = ∆
