DescriptionIn the first clip in a series of ten from the fifth of seven interviews in which 8th grader Stephanie explores Early Algebraic Ideas about Binomial Expansion, the researcher, Carolyn Maher, introduces Stephanie to mathematical notation to represent the number of ways to select a specific number of objects from a set. Maher asks Stephanie to recall an earlier problem task, in which she was asked to determine the possible number of unifix "towers", four cubes tall, when selecting from two colors, red and yellow. As Stephanie described the number of towers possible that had four red cubes (no yellow cubes) or four yellow cubes (no red cubes), and then the number that had exactly one yellow cube, Maher recorded her conclusions using the notation that she had introduced.
The problems as presented to Stephanie:
If order does not matter, how many ways can you select 4 objects from a group of 4? How many ways can you select one object from a group of 4?
