Shirts and Pants with Jamie and Michael, Clip 1 of 3: Introducing and working on the problem [video]. Retrieved from https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/T38G8NDP
DescriptionDuring this session, the students begin by working on the following problem: “Stephen has a white shirt, a blue shirt and a yellow shirt. He has a pair of blue jeans and a pair of white jeans. How many different outfits can he make?” Researcher Amy Martino introduces the problem by indicating that she is interested in how they solve the problem rather than in just the answer. Jamie draws pictures of shirts and pants to represent outfits, labeling the shirts and pants with the letters b, w, and y to represent the colors blue, white, and yellow. She initially counts the shirts and pants separately for a total of twelve outfits, but revises her count to six following a discussion with researcher Alice Alston about the meaning of an outfit.
