DescriptionThe small group interview with 4 students (Jeff, Michelle, Milin, and Stephanie) lasted about an hour and occurred after the students worked in the classroom on building towers of height five selecting from two colors of Unifix cubes. Researcher Maher begins the interview by asking the 4th graders what they remembered about the problem and how they solved it. The students share their ideas, describe patterns that they have noticed, and offer a solution for building towers 3-tall, selecting from 2 colors. Stephanie offers an answer for towers 10 tall, selecting from 2 colors. In sharing their ideas, the students use markers and paper to represent drawings of towers and explain their ideas. The students are asked to convince the researcher and each other of their reasoning.Researcher Alice Alston and teacher Donna Barnes observe the interview. This camera view focuses on the pair of Stephanie and Jeff.
