DescriptionIn the first of five clips in Series Two of Exploring Linear Functions: Guess My Rule, Yonny and Brandon, 7th grade students in an after-school enrichment program, are challenged by researcher Arthur Powell to find a rule for problem 1. Both boys begin with a recursive strategy that increases the number to be added to the independent variable, X, by one in order to obtain the corresponding dependent variable, Y. When researcher Powell asks them for the Y value when X is twenty, both boys continue to extend their tables. When they notice that the dependent variable is increasing by two, they shift to that new strategy and find the value to be forty-one. When asked for the Y value when X is one hundred, Yonny suggests that, since five times twenty is one hundred, the corresponding value for Y should be five times forty-one or two hundred five. Teacher Alan Hiba is observing.
