Members of the community are able to use the RUanalytic tool to create web-based, sharable, annotated videos that analyze the mathematics teaching and learning process. The tool is intended for use by researchers, teacher educators, undergraduate and graduate students, pre-service and in-service educators.
An account will be created for each individual approved for membership. The account provides:
An analytic author may create an analytic for a variety of reasons:
- A workspace where the member may create and store analytics for personal and professional use
- The ability to share analytics with other members of the VMC community, for co-creation, viewing and commenting. An example of use is a graduate course where the faculty member and students are all members of the VMC community.
- The ability to share the analytic with a wider audience through the creation of a non-permanent URL. An example is creating an analytic for use in an undergraduate child development course lecture
- The ability to submit an analytic for peer review and permanent publication at the VMC portal. A DOI is assigned and the video is citable and embeddable in articles, dissertations, etc. Statistics that demonstrate the impact of this peer reviewed publication are viewable at the VMC web portal.
- An example of effective teaching or of a student demonstrating effective reasoning, in a professional development class for in-service teachers;
- Evidence of learning in a secondary education university course
- Confirming or rejecting a hypothesis in research
- Illustrating a hypothesis or concept in an online article or dissertation.
- Many books and articles have already been written based on the Video Mosaic's unique longitudinal research collection. Published analytics are permanently hosted in the VMC collection. These analytics consist of learning events-video clips and analyses-compiled into an innovative publication that integrates primary research with secondary analyses into a new form of published resource that ensures the VMC portal is a dynamic and rich space for discovery and collaboration. Analytics that are published at the VMC receive a DOI and become part of the scholarly record, the same as peer reviewed books and journal articles. The analytic peer review process ensures that analytics add value and innovation to the ongoing scholarly conversation about student learning and reasoning, as evidenced in the videos in the VMC collection. Publication ensures impact for the author through open access at the VMC portal, which is indexed through Google Scholar. The published analytic is assigned a DOI that can be cited and embedded in books, articles, dissertations and presentations. The VMC portal is a part of RUcore, the Rutgers Community Repository, a preservation and open access repository committed to making resources available to the scholarly record for long term use by others. Preservation of resources includes all relevant metadata related to creation and use of resources for future generations of scholars.

Participation in the VMC community requires completion of an application for community membership. The application helps us understand how you use the tool and confirms that you have read, and agree to abide by, the VMC Community Code of Conduct. The videos in this collection are unique and represent the generous contributions of student and researcher participants. The VMC community consists of members who are dedicated to improving education and student learning. It is essential that videos and analytics are created and viewed with respect for participants and creators.
